A few years ago, when I first moved out of my parents home, I had an exciting shopping session for home products to fill all my needs for a new place. I am one of those people who actually enjoy cleaning and organizing my home so, that day, when I saw my cart filled with all the detergent, spray, cleaning liquid and mops for the next months, I was a rather content person.
For me, an organized and clean home equals to a calm mind and serene environment. For my husband equals to me expelling my inner demons on saturday mornings. I believe he is kind of used to it now, but I could see the look in his eyes everytime I said “It’s cleaning day!”. I was happy, he – not that much…
Well, today I have a different approach to my cleaning spree sessions. I still enjoy the moment and the result. The products, not so much. These days I seriously avoid most of the usual home cleaning supplies.
Soapnuts are not actually nuts. They are fruits and a natural wonder which I’ve been using for over a year to do my laundry and keep bragging about them to everyone. I was looking for something other than powder or chemical liquids to wash my clothes, that was evironmental friendly, cruelty-free, not too expensive and easy to use. When I found out about soapnuts, I actually got all this and also a natural, non-polluting, compostable and suitable for sentitive or allergic prone skin product.
To be honest, I thought it was just too good to be truth. After some online research, I got my first bag at this website along some other natural products [which will be here reviewed later on]. I wasn’t sure about buying the whole soapnuts, the liquid or the powder, so I’ve decided to order the original product and test it like that.
I got fresh, clean laundry from the first wash. Sure, it doesn’t have any perfume so it smells like nothing. For me it’s perfectly fine, but it is possible to add some drops of essential oils if you prefer some scent. I’ve tried with lemon essential oil and it’s lovely!
It’s very simple to work with them too. Simply add some 4 or 5 soapnuts to the muslin bag provided and pop it inside your machine, with the laundry. If you wash at a temperature below 30ºC, put the little muslin bag in a glass of hot water for 5 minutes and then put both the soapnuts and the soaking water, with the laundry. That simple. You can also reuse the same soapnuts inside the little bag for 4 or 5 more times. I think I will never buy regular laundry detergent ever again!
The “240 washes” bag I got is still going after one year so I really recommend this brand as they have really good quality soapnuts! (of course it also depends on how much laundry you have to do). I think on my next purchse I will buy a larger bag so I can try to make my own soapnut liquid, great for laundry too, but also as a general cleaning product. I will write about it then, to confirm that soapnuts are as good for the floor and dishes as they are for clothes!
